Submitted by: Amit Tripathi

Like all Indian matrimonial, food plays an important part in a Hindu Brahmin matrimonial function. Most Brahmins in India are vegetarian except Saraswat Brahmins and Bengali Brahmins. In this article, lets look at the commonly-served vegetarian delicacies in a Brahmin wedding.

Breakfast: Depending on the budget, a Brahmin wedding can have a simple or a more lavish breakfast. A simple breakfast can comprise of Idly, Pongal (a sweet/spicy rice dish), vada, sambar, chutney, and coffee. A more lavish breakfast can include all of the above-mentioned items, plus pineapple halwa, dosa, poori, and Ashoka halwa (a red-coloured sweet made of moong dal).

Lunch: A basic lunch in a Brahmin matrimony can comprise of white rice, sambar, vada, kootu (mixed vegetable dish), poriyal (vegetable), pickles, sweet dishes, appalam (papad), and vatha kolambu (a tangy curry). And if the family has the budget, a Brahmin lunch can also include veg biryani, raitha, avial (a coconut-based veg dish), and two poriyal. Sweet dishes can include cashew roll, gulab jamun, cut fruits, and ice cream.

Then theres dosa of different types such as rava dosa, bonda (snack made of potatoes), vadas of different types, kachori, and tea/coffee. Evening snacks also include sweets like Jalebi, wheat halwa, cashew halwa, pineapple pudding or gulab jamun.

Dinner: In a Brahmin matrimony, dinner is very lavish. It can comprise of welcome drinks, veg pulav, raitha, dosa, and vegetables like paneer butter masala. A Brahmin dinner also includes chapatis or pooris, different types of vadas, delicacies like Gobi 65 or cauliflower pakoda, and sweets like gulab jamun, carrot halwa, and ice cream. Other popular dinner items in a Brahmin matrimony are pachadi (chutney), veg roll, Chenna masala, Karuveppilai Sadam (curry rice), curd rice, ghee, and beeda (pan).

North Indian dishes: Most of the items mentioned above are South Indian dishes. If the Brahmin matrimony has a North Indian menu, the welcome items include mini samosa or kachori, pista/badam/rose milk, or grape juice. Different types of chips are served, including potato or banana chips and papad. Some people may include cutlets in the menu. Examples of cutlets are veg cutlet or sada culet.

When it comes to North Indian food, no menu can be without some chat items. A Brahmin matrimonial event can include chat items like pani puri, dahi papdi, pav bhaji, samosa, etc. The main course can include any of the popular vegetable dishes like mix vegetable korma, baby corn paneer masala, mix vegetable, malai kofta, etc. Roti dishes include different types of naan, tandoori rotis, goolchas, parathas, rumali roti, etc.

At the time of Muhurthum of a Brahmin matrimony, guests are served with lemon or orange juice.
